Moonraker Challenge App 2026

Making the moonraker challenge digital

The Moonraker Challenge has always been a team trek: groups walk a set route, find checkpoints, and answer questions along the way while raising money. In the past this ran on paper route cards, answer sheets and manual sign-in at each checkpoint. That worked, but organisers only saw results once teams got back. Lost or damaged sheets also caused problems, and nobody had a live picture of where teams were. To fix this, we built a dedicated Moonraker Challenge app for iPhone and Android. So how does the app work? Joining a team: Each team gets a unique code from the organisers. Every member signs up, enters the code, and the team chooses either the Short or Long route. Following the route: The full walking directions are always available in the Steps tab, so teams don't need to carry printed route cards. Answering questions: At each stop, teams answer a question in the app. Each question allows three team attempts, and answers sync instantly to everyone on the same team, so the whole group sees the same progress. Checkpoint check-in and check-out: Each checkpoint has a QR poster. Teams scan in when they arrive and scan out when they leave, which replaces manual sign-in sheets. Safety: Participants can add emergency contacts to their profile, so organisers have the right details if something goes wrong on the trail. How it helps organisers Every answer and checkpoint scan goes straight to a live spreadsheet, with the time and approximate location. During the event, organisers can see which teams have reached which checkpoint, how they're doing on the questions, and whether anyone is falling behind. If a phone loses signal, answers are saved on the device and sent automatically once it reconnects. Privacy and data The app collects only what the event needs. Participants can delete their account and all their personal data from inside the app at any time, in line with GDPR and App Store requirements.

The FInal Result

I built the app for the Moonraker Challenge, and it changed how the event runs for both participants and organisers. For participants, the app made the challenge much easier: -No more paperwork: Teams no longer carry printed route cards or answer sheets that could get lost or soaked on the trail. Everything they need is on their phones. The route always to hand: The full walking directions are in the Steps tab, so teams can check the way whenever they need to. -Instant feedback: Teams know straight away whether an answer is right, instead of waiting until the finish to find out. -The whole team stays in sync: Answers update across every team member's phone, so there's no confusion over who has the sheet or which questions are done. -Quicker checkpoints: Checking in and out is a quick QR scan rather than queueing to sign paperwork, so teams can keep walking. -No worries about signal: If the signal drops out, answers are saved on the phone and sent automatically once it reconnects. Safer on the trail: Emergency contacts are stored in each profile, and organisers can see where teams are throughout the event. -For the Moonraker Challenge organisers, the app gives a live view of every team's progress, answers and checkpoint scans, without collecting and marking paper sheets at the end. That makes the event easier to run and easier to keep safe. Overall, the app turned a paper-based event into a smoother, safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone taking part.
